What is a domain name? A domain name is the name of your website or your website address such as google.com, sabinro.co.uk (in my case) etc.
Why buy domains?
Voice.com sold for $30 million in 2019. Hotels.com for $11 million in 2001. Tesla.com for $11 million in 2014. Diamond.com for $7.5 million in 2006. And the list goes on. You can find more list here.
As you can see domain names are very lucrative. But how do you find such domain names for sale? Usually, you would go on to domain broker such as godaddy, namejet, namecheap etc. But if the domain you looking is already taken, you can make an offer via the broker or just contact the site admin if already hosted.
As you can see from above, that is how you can make offer through domain broker. You can’t make offer to google.com for obvious reason (unless you have trillion, quadrillion dollar). Having said this, there was a guy who actually managed to buy google.com at $12 for a minute. But later Google offered him $6006.13 to compensate. lol. More on this here.
Different purpose
People buy domain name for various reason. Mostly for business or brand related while other could be for hobbies, information etc. So, why did I buy 170+ domains from 2011 to 2020? Well for me, mostly it was for SEO (Search engine optimisation) purpose. Not all domains were newly registered. About 70% of the domains I bought were expired or deleted which mean they all had been registered before at sometime. It’s just that the owner of the domain did not bother to renew or may be of some other reasons. Oh! and domain has to be renewed yearly.
Say for example, abccompany is a technology company and it has website name abcecompany.com. After few years company did not do well and goes bankrupt. And domain renewal is in a year and there is no one to take care of that. The domain gets expired. Now, this domain will show in the domain broker expired list or any other site that lists such as moonsy.com. It is available for me or anyone to buy it. These are the kind of expired domains I was buying at the time.
I was using them expired domains for PBN (Private blog network). I would buy or in this case renew it in bulk and populate each site with articles and link it to the main website also called money page. More on the image below.
The reason
The whole idea of this expired domain and turning them into PBN is to rank business or money site on first page of search index such as google, yahoo, bing etc. Since the expired domain has more power and authority than newly registered domain, if I link PBN to the money site, it will pass it’s juice and power up the new domain. Thus pushing the money site to first page and achieving your money site goal whatever maybe such as shopping, booking table etc.
Above method does not rank your business site to the top page alone. There are so many ways and 200 other factors or work involved.
To the point
Okay! I went side track on above. Anyway to find out how much money I spent on 170+ domains, you can see my below godaddy account order history. The most I paid for 1 domain was $999.17. Also I have second godaddy account and name cheap too. If I include them two accounts with the below account, I think it would be around $8k (just an estimate) on 3 accounts together. Could be little more than that.
Although all the domains I once bought are not own by me anymore. There is a chance some one might have grabbed a few of them.
List of all the domains purchased for the above are shared here $6k domains.
So, all this means is I lost $6k on domains with zero ROI. Will I ever buy domain again? Yes, I will but not for the above purpose. I will be buying 1 or 2 a year, mainly for money page aka business purpose. There are plenty of services offered on the web who exactly does what I did.
